The Masroor Rock Cut Temple complex is dedicated to Rama, Laxmana, and Sita, gods from the time of Mahabharata whose stone images are worshiped by Hindu devotees who come from around the world. The temple complex is built on a water pond and situated on a hill with panoramic views of the terrain beyond, including the snowy peaks of the Dhauladhar Range.

 

The Kangra Fort was built by the royal Rajput family of Kangra State (the Katoch dynasty), which traces its origins to the ancient Trigarta Kingdom, mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. It is the largest fort in the Himalayas and probably the oldest dated fort in India. The fort of Kangra resisted Akbar’s siege in 1615. However, Akbar’s son Jehangir successfully subdued the fort in 1620, forcing the submission of the Raja of Chamba, “the greatest of all the rajas in the region.

 

Brajreshwari Devi Temple, A legend says that after Goddess Sati sacrificed herself in the honor of Lord Shiva in her Fathers Yagya. Shiva took her body on his shoulder and started Tandav. In order to stop him from destroying the world Lord Vishnu divided the body of Sati into 51 parts with his Chakra. The left breast of Sati fell at this spot, thus making it a Shakti Peeth. The original temple was built by the Pandavas at the time of Mahabharatha.

We began our journey from the Tsuglagkhang Complex  

A religious centre that was built when his Holiness the Dalai Lama visited India for the first time in 1959. It has Dalai Lama’s abode and the Namgyal monastery, an in-house bookstore, library. This monastery is an ode to the soldiers who laid their lives fighting for the freedom of Tibet.

Do not miss on the Karmapa’s speech on every Wednesday and Saturday. This monastery is open from 8 AM to 11PM.

Kangra Fort and Museum   

As we were visiting beautiful places in Dharamshala, a curiosity to its rich heritage was but obvious. So, we headed to the Kangra Fort to take a sneak peek into the Himachal culture and tradition. It is one of the oldest forts in India and the largest in the Himalayas; it was home to the rulers of Kangra – the Katoch dynasty. Though it today lies in ruins, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Manjhi and the Banganga river.

Another interesting spot that one cannot and should not miss is the Maharaja Sansar Chand Katoch Museum which is a living showcase of Kangra’s history, art and culture. In the Kangra art museum you can find the ethos of Kangra valley preserved delicately through paintings, statues, textile and fabrics, utensils, monuments, weapons and armours. Do not miss on the rare collection of coins, pottery and tribal ornaments.
